LEADERSHIP

ABOUT OUR LEADERSHIP

In the Christian Reformed Church, we hold to a presbyterian church government. This means we only recognize two offices in church leadership: Elders and Deacons. These offices are outlined in 1 Timothy 3.

An Elder is an ordained man of the faith who meets the qualifications set out in 1 Tim. 3:1-7, such as being blameless, sober-minded, hospitable, rules his own house well, and is able to teach. Elders are charged with exercising spiritual authority and oversight over the lives of the congregation, keeping watch over their souls (Heb. 13:17). We believe that Pastors are a type of Elder who is given the responsibility of publicly proclaiming the Word of God during worship (1 Tim. 5:17, James 3:1).

A Deacon is an ordained man of faith who meets the qualifications set out in 1 Tim. 3:8-13, such as being reverent, not greedy, not given to much wine, having a pure conscience, blameless, and rulers of their own households. Deacons are charged with tending to the physical and material needs of the congregations so that the Elders can be devoted to the Ministry of the Word (Acts 6:1-7).

Our members are divided into 6 care groups, with each group being assigned to an Elder-Deacon team. This ensures that each member has at least 1 of each office-bearer who is responsible for their spiritual and material needs. Of course, all Elders and Deacons are available to all of our members, but this system ensures that no one is neglected in their walk with Christ.

OUR PASTORS

At First Artesia, we have two pastors on our staff

He was ordained as a “Commissioned Pastor” by the CRC in 2021, and in 2024 he was ordained as a “Minister of the Word”. Rob also serves as President of Elders.

Pastor John Dwyer

Pastor John has been at our church since 2024. He is finishing his MDiv at Talbot School of Theology. He is the father of two wonderful children. He was hired as a “Pastoral Assistant” with a License to Exhort in 2024 by the CRC, and in 2026 he was ordained as a “Commissioned Pastor”.
