SACRAMENTS

We affirm only two Sacraments as instituted by Jesus Christ. Those being: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

As a church with Reformed roots, we believe sacraments are visible signs and seals of internal and invisible grace through the power of the Holy Spirit. These sacraments seal God’s promises in us and nourish and sustain our faith. (Belgic Confession Article 33)calls for.

BAPTISM

We believe the Sacrament of Baptism is the means by which “we are received into God’s church.” It is a “witness to us that God, being our gracious Father, will be our God forever.” (Belgic Confession Article 34)
As commanded by Jesus Christ, we baptize members “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)
We believe that in baptism, God signifies to us that by the blood of Jesus Christ, our sins are washed away and our soul is cleansed, by the working of the Holy Spirit (BC Art. 34)

We also believe children of believers ought to be baptized because they are children of the covenant, just as in the Old Testament children were circumcised as a sign of the covenant. We believe that “Christ has shed His blood no less” for the children of believers as He did for the adults. (BC Art 34)

LORD'S SUPPER

We believe the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is the means by which our spiritual lives are nourished and sustained when received with true faith. (BC Art 35).

We believe that to eat body and drink the blood of Christ means that by true faith, we “receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life” and that through the work of the Holy Spirit “we are flesh of His flesh and bone of His bone. And we forever live on and are governed by one Spirit, as the members of our body are by one soul.” (Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 76)
We believe that just as truly as we take the bread and the wine, “so truly we receive into our souls… the true body and true blood of Christ.”

At First Artesia, we partake of the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday morning of each month. In keeping with the commands of the Apostle Paul, that participants must “test himself” and “judge the body rightly”, lest they partake “in an unworthy manner” and bring “judgment to himself” (1 Cor. 11:28,29, LSB); we at First Artesia only allow baptized Christians who are truly repentant over their sins to participate in the Sacrament. You need not be a member of First Artesia to participate. If you do not meet these criteria, we respectfully ask you to allow the elements to pass over you during a Communion Service.
